Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) June 16, 2006 -- Today the Alzheimer's
Store celebrates five years of serving the unique needs of
people with Alzheimer's disease (and other dementia-related
disorders), those who care for them, and their families. In
1998, the publication of The Complete Guide to Alzheimer's-Proofing
Your Home, by Mark Warner (Purdue University Press), provided
strategies and products to make homes for people with Alzheimer's
disease safer and more dementia-friendly. With this book the
seeds for The Alzheimer's Store were planted. Though the book
listed sources to buy each product mentioned, it soon became
apparent that what the readers really needed was a single
source where they could buy these products ... and at that
time no such store existed.
Mark and Ellen Warner opened the Alzheimer's Store on June
14, 2001, featuring only 14 products, including a large, easy-to-read
wall clock that also displays the current day and date (for
those who need help remembering what day it is) to a life-like
baby doll the renews the nurturing feelings of a mother.
Today the Alzheimer's Store, based in Atlanta, GA, carries
more than two hundred products, each with its own special
story and serving the needs of people with dementia, their
families, and those caring for them.
Linda's father had been unable to dial her phone number for
months. With the Memory Phone, a telephone that allows you
to push the picture of the person you want to call, her father
called her the very next morning.
Michael discovered his mother was taking her pills and then
taking them again (double dosing). Something had to be done
immediately. With the purchase of the lockable Automatic Medication
Dispenser, she could no longer take more than one dose at
a time.
Joan had begun to wander at night. Her sister Sally couldn't
sleep out of fear that she would leave home unnoticed. With
the Motion Detector with Remote Alarm Sally was alerted each
time she got out of bed and was able to get a good night sleep
for the first time in weeks.
Martin, a former member of his church choir, was in the later
stages of Alzheimer's and no longer able to speak. To his
family's surprise, a sing-along video brought back memories,
allowing Martin to join in with each song substituting "la
la" for the words.
The Alzheimer's Store focuses solely on products that maintain
dignity and safety for those in any stage of the disease.
"We are so grateful for the gift of being able to touch
so many lives and to truly make a difference," commented
Ellen Warner, President of the company. Much of Ellen's day
is spent on the phone discussing products with customers and
helping them find the right product for their special need.
"Yet we look forward to the day when there will be no
need for an Alzheimer's store," she added.
So, "Happy Anniversary, Alzheimer's Store, and may your
days be numbered!."
